Students of St Catherene Girls’ Kesses celebrate stellar results.

Students of St Catherene Girls Secondary School, Kesses in Uasin Gishu County have a reason to smile after the school board of management donated a bull worth Sh85, 000 to be slaughtered in celebrating last year’s exemplary KCSE examination results.
The catholic sponsored school with a population of 610 students posted an impressive mean score of 9.1 up from 8.41 the previous year.
The school that was promoted to county level two years ago with 102 candidates had 9 (A), 30 (B+) 34 (B), 18 B, 8 C+, 2 C- and 1 D+.
“In celebrating last year’s exemplary results, the school board of management has bought a big ox for the current students to eat on behalf of their predecessors. You are going to enjoy the fruits of those who came before you and others who will come after will also enjoy your fruits after you leave,” Mr James Chelanga, the school board of management chairman told the students on Sunday during a prayer service.

Mr Chelanga said that the school admits students from marginalized regions who have escaped female genital mutilation (FGM), early marriages and domestic violence.
“It is good to note that most of our students come from marginalized regions in this country like Samburu, Marsabit, Pokot and even Elgeyo Marakwet where FGM is still being practiced,” added Mr Chelanga.
The school Principal Mrs Mary Irene Okoth said the school’s mean score had risen from 5.3 in 2011 to 9.1 in 2015.
Mrs Okoth attributed the exemplary results to good cooperation between the school management, teaching staff and students.
“Our students have always motivated us to work harder and provide an enabling studying environment for them. The teachers have always ensured that the students complete their syllabus on time so that they can start preparing for their final exams,” explained the school head.

The school president Joan Chebet applauded the management for the move saying that she will encourage her colleagues to study harder and improve on their mean score this year.
“We are so happy that we are going to feast on the bull and all we can assure the school management is that we will not let them down come next year,” said the form four student.
The function was also attended by among others the school’s Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) chairperson Philip Bitok.

BAD GIRL: The Preacher’s Daughter

An illustration picture of a bad girl. Photo courtesy.

I glance at my watch again maybe for the millionth time. Only a minute has elapsed how unbelievable!

I curse myself for registering for this class. Usually i could settle for anything but class on a Friday evening.

The buzzing of my phone awakens me from my wicked reverie and suddenly I roar back to life.

Who doesn’t like parties? I smile inwardly knowing i have something to look forward to.

Moments later I am in my dorm room considering all my fancy party clothes.

Expectedly so it is hard to choose. I settle for a deep shade of blue.

Bodies are swaying, drinks flying, music banging… Standard. I settle down with my ‘elixir’ it can’t get better than this.

I get lost in the crowd saying the same thing in my head over and over again before i pass out.

The following day i wake up feeling pathetic. Was i saying ‘you only live once’ last night?

All i need is to be woken up when the world is almost over. I would trade this feeling for anything. I think to myself i have officially quit partying and drinking.

After showering, i get dressed convincing myself it would make me feel better. My room reeks of alcohol but that doesn’t bother me much.

I fix myself a cup of ‘coffee’ and before i get comfortable a knock on the door makes me jump. My mother’s voice floats clearly through the door.

Oow! Did i mention am a preacher’s daughter?

GHIPUKA OCPD: MUSIC ‘OCPD’ CHALLENGES COUNTY GOVERNMENTS TO SUPPORT ARTISRTS

Migori based musician Steven Spencer Otieno who goes by the stage name, Ghipuka OCPD has advised county governments to create a platform that will support local talents at the grass roots level.
The 25-year old musician who launched his music career in 2006 said that most young Kenyans have talents in different fields of entertainment that are yet to be explored.

“We have many young Kenyans at the county level who have talents in different fields ranging from music, acting among others. The county governments which were created in the new dispensation should come on board and start supporting them,” he said.

In an exclusive interview with LubangaSpeaks.com, GHIPUKA OCPD who has so far released 7 songs and one music video lamented that most youths with talents are unable to explore them citing lack of capital.
“The reason why Nairobi or Mombasa based artists overshadow us is because they have all the necessary facilities they need to excel. If the counties come to our aid them its beyond doubt that we are set to outshine them,” he added.
